An Allegro Scherzando Concertante — a pocket concerto Un Allegro Scherzando Concertante — un concerto de poche
C3 is an original work for trumpet and organ written for a young fraternal duo — a synthesis of the works in this genre that had long been dominated by transcriptions. Its title, Allegro Scherzando Concertante, is a friendly homage to the initials of its dedicatees: Carson and Colby Cooman.
The organ here is far more than a mere accompanist. In the spirit of the old concerto concept, the two instruments engage in a continuous dialogue — agreeing, disagreeing, and ultimately finding their resolution in a shared final phrase. The work is deliberately tonal and neo-classical, integrating various secular and sacred musical styles along with barely-veiled pastiches and quotations.
On Cochereau, Delmote, and the trumpet-organ tradition Sur Cochereau, Delmote et la tradition trompette-orgue
I remember that it was in the 1960s that our friends Pierre Cochereau and Roger Delmote formed the first "travelling" trumpet and organ duo, because they toured throughout France with a large portable organ that Cochereau transported in a trailer pulled behind one of his always-luxurious cars. Their repertoire, as well as that of their colleagues Marie-Claire Alain and Maurice André, was mainly made up of transcriptions. I believe that this is still the case for the majority of trumpet and organ duos.
I thus wanted to offer to a young and fraternal duo an original work that would be a kind of synthesis of the works in this genre. The title of this Allegro Scherzando Concertante is a friendly homage to the initials of the dedicatees: Carson and Colby Cooman.
This is in fact a mini-concerto, or a pocket concerto. The role of the organ is much more than that of a simple accompanist. As the old concept would have it, there is a kind of discussion between the two brothers, on subjects which succeed each other — agreement, disagreement, and finally agreement — to the point of finishing on the repeated statement of the same brief musical phrase.
The work is deliberately tonal and neo-classical. It integrates various secular and sacred musical styles, and does not shy away from pastiche or barely-veiled quotations. Through the registration, which is partly fixed, the trumpet is placed in competition with certain organ stops, the reeds in particular. Traditional and effective use of the expressive box is also called for, where the organ permits. It is, however, important that the timbre of the trumpet blend as well as possible with those of the organ, and that rubato be used with the greatest moderation — only the fermatas may be prolonged.
This is a joyous work. The short chorale at the end of the first third, with its false Gregorian theme in the pedals, would never succeed in making the work entirely serious...
