A hymn to confidence — composed in two days Un hymne à la confiance — composé en deux jours

Let Nothing Ever Grieve You for SATB Chorus and Organ was written for and is dedicated to the Harvard University Chorus. It was composed in June 2006 in just two days — a speed that Boisseau attributes directly to the "clear inspiration" of the text by Paul Fleming (1609–1640), as translated from the original German by Carson P. Cooman.

Jean-Thierry Boisseau

The text is the expression of a kind of musical energy which one could consider as the equivalent of that which faith may also produce. I therefore set out to transcribe musically the mood of the text outside of any religious considerations, without denying them. This work is a hymn to the confidence that one can have in the Other, whether that be one's fellow man or God. It is also an invitation to dignity and to rigour, in the act of rejoicing.

One can easily see that the role of the organ surpasses that of simple accompaniment. The organ gives this work its pulsation and also links the various sung passages. The quasi-minimalist rhythmic regularity can be seen as an evocation of the Prayer Wheels of Eastern spiritual traditions.

I specifically tried to avoid any notion of virtuosity in this work, which may link it — in this sense — to certain choral works by Fauré, Britten, or perhaps Dominic Argento.

The textLe texte
A hymn to confidence in the Other Un hymne à la confiance en l'Autre
Set outside any religious considerations, without denying them. An invitation to dignity and rigour in the act of rejoicing — whether "the Other" is one's fellow man or God.
The organL'orgue
More than accompaniment — the pulse of the work Plus qu'un accompagnement — le pouls de l'œuvre
The organ provides the work's pulsation and links the sung passages. Its quasi-minimalist rhythmic regularity evokes the Prayer Wheels of Eastern spiritual traditions.
Boisseau specifically avoided virtuosity — linking the work, in this sense, to choral works by Fauré, Britten, and perhaps Dominic Argento.
Speed of compositionRapidité de composition
Two days — driven by the text Deux jours — porté par le texte
The clarity and energy of Fleming's poem — as rendered in Cooman's translation — drove an unusually swift compositional process. The text provided the musical energy directly.
